Over the last couple of years, I’ve shared my thoughts on Advent. I wondered and thought about what I want to share this year…and then my dad passed from this life. I found it hard to settle my mind and concentrate on almost anything. But then in the last two weeks, I have been taking part in a bible study at church entitled, Psalms: The School of Prayer and my course was appearing before me.
I’ve always loved the psalms. I’m the first to admit I’m far from understanding them but they still appeal to my heart and soul. I think they are rich in words and images. In class, we learned they are brief pieces of poetry. In poetry, images are portrayed in a few words but can be worth thousands of words. We need to sip on the words of the psalms. Not to guzzle them in as if we are thirsty after running a race but sip in their words like a yummy mug of hot chocolate. They are intended to make us slow down and think.
Today, as I review my bible study, I am going to slow down, reflect and sip on Psalm 119v89: Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.
My prayer is you too will find time and a quiet place during this Advent season to sip in the psalms and enjoy the beauty of their words.
Lovely thought, Terri.
